Maryland Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts
MdVLA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting Maryland artists’ legal rights. Through the help of our professionally trained network of lawyers, we proudly provide pro bono legal referrals and services to artists in the state of Maryland. We hold lectures and seminars as well as Art Law Clinics for consultations, and we generate educational materials to keep you in the know.

Pro Bono Representation Project
Program Description:
Are you a Maryland artist or arts organization in need of legal representation? At MdVLA, we provide pro bono legal representation for self-described creatives: from hip hop musicians to florists, makers to fiber artists. Our network of attorneys generally handle legal issues related to your business, such as contract review, LLC formation, copyright registration, and other matters that may affect the livelihood of a professional or amatuer creative.

MdVLA screens all applications within 24-48 hours to determine whether a request may be urgent. If you believe your request is urgent, please provide details in your application. If we determinate that your situation is urgent, we will endeavor to get in touch with you as soon as is practicable. If your application is not urgent, a member of our staff will be in touch within 7 business days to schedule an initial intake.
Clients must meet certain income requirements to qualify for representation, and there is a small administrative fee.

Art Law Clinic
Program Description:
Are you an artist or creative in Maryland? Do you have legal questions or concerns related to your work? Make an appointment for MdVLA's monthly Art Law Clinic. You can sign up for a 30-minute one-on-one consult with one of our volunteer attorneys to sort out any short-form general issues or questions you might have. Our attorneys can provide more information about issues related to your creative business, such questions about contracts, nonprofit/LLC formation and maintenance, copyright and trademark registration and enforcement, and other questions.
